Short Extract of my film

During the making of my film i used my Macbook as the main tool for editing and finalising. Using the Imovie software i compiled all my scenes into a short two minute clip. This process allowed me to find any mistakes in the filming, so giving me time to plan a re-shoot.

There are three actors in my film. leaving me with a quick selection process allowed me to start filming sooner and get a better result. The featured clip was filmed in Savages wood in Bradley Stoke, South Glos. Being local to the area, this provided a perfect location to film and structure my video.

I decided to create an unsettling feeling with these clips as if something is wrong. I think that is achieved through the quick jump cuts creating both an ellipsis of time and a good effect.

During the planning of my film, i have included a scene with a gun. I have therfor had to obtain the correct prop needed for the sequence. unfortunately, the only resource available was a toy gun originally green and orange. i have adapted this prop to make it look as realistic as possible, here are some before and after pictures.

Film Animatic

I have decided to put my storyboard into an animatic form, this is to help outline the flow of my short film.

Finalised Storyboard

  1. CU of pond, camera at ground level
  2. CU of pond, camera at ground level. person walks past, only legs visible
  3. MS of open field, same person walking into woods.
  4. LS - CU. Same person walking towards camera, fades out and in to create ellipsis.
  5. MS of man walking round corner towards camera
  6. MS second person “jumps out” and makes first jump, mates mucking around
  7. two mates walking forward, stop, start talking to person of camera
  8. camera pans down to their feet, here two gunshots and see body’s drop to floor.
  9. camera tracks sideways up the shooters arm to his face.
  10. fades to black
  11. opens with a dog jumping at door barking etc.
  12. person getting ready to take dog out, putting on shoes
  13. grabbing dog lead/going out front door
  14. dog owner walking through woods
  15. comes across dead bodies and drops dog lead in shock
  16. CU of phone in hand, dials 999
  17. over shoulder view of dead bodies, man on phone to police, do not see his face
  18. camera spins around to his face ECU. its the gunman/killer
  19. Fades to black and title appears “”altered image”

Just a few more camera angles and location shots

"one Man and his Dog"... this shots may revoke a seemingly emotional response from the audience, a man living on his own with his dog. The audience may sympathise for the character, especially as his luck is about to get worse when he comes accross the dead bodies of two young teenagers

Photo shoot for film location
camera angles and shots

I chose these locations to put an impression of lonelyness and independence on the scene. They are wide angles of rural areas (fields, woods, pond etc.) this helps to emphasise the fact that there is probably nobody else around.

Film Prelim. task

After completing my School Magazine front cover, i had the opportunity to attend a workshop run by a trained professional hired by the school. I was taught how to use the Imovie software using Mac's and have since decided to choose the "film" option for my foundation production. During the workshop i managed to comprise a short film demonstrating what i had been taught.

After this, i started my preliminary task. Here is a link to it on youtube.

Final Design, worked through using “Pages”

Above is the final product of our School magazine cover. It includes the prior mentioned features of our final draft, including the framed photos adapting to the style of a family photo album, also the “Christmas Edition” strap line across the bottom of the page. We chose to vary the colour of this part to give extended emphasis over the point. I think that the magazine cover overall seems to be well developed and adapted from the original draft.

Final Design for school magazine front cover

Unlike the previous draft, the title in this one is featured across the top of the page ensuring that it can be seen clearly. A selection of three photos are dotted across the page each with a annotation or complimenting picture. After having a chance to use the “Pages” software featured on Apple Mac’s, the photos are framed using various styles available. The reason for choosing specific frames gives the cover an effect of being a family photo album / scrapbook, well relating to the christmas style. After deciding on this layout, we used “Pages” to put our plans together and produce a well engineered and final copy of the Magazine front cover.

Secondary Design for School magazine front cover

The picture above features a sketch of our second draft for the school magazine front cover. The main features of this one are similar to those of the first draft, but they assume a different a layout. The ribbon is formed in a cross meeting at the top right corner of the page and the photos are together in the main body of the page. Our original thoughts were that the photos would draw the most attention if featured centrally. But, we soon realised that placing the title down the left hand side would make it less prominent and noticeable. This led to more alterations and our final draft.

Original Design for school magazine front cover

The original idea for our magazine cover came purely from Brainstorming and scattering ideas. We decided to go for a christmas themed version of a school / college magazine. The title across the middle was originally designed to be incased in a ribbon and the background taking the appearance of christmas wrapping paper. A few photos would be scattered around to show the recent events involving the college. The photos would be framed accordingly to give the effect of a family photo album, fitting with the festive themed cover. From these original ideas we formed a second more comprehensive draft.
